Muscle, tendon & joint pain

Aching joints, stubborn tendon pain and widespread muscle pain, including fibromyalgia, are common in midlife. Hormonal change can play a part, and the right assessment and exercise plan can help.

Why pain can appear around menopause

Oestrogen helps keep tendons, muscles and joints healthy. As levels fall, tendons can become more vulnerable to overload and slower to recover, and joint aches (arthralgia) are a common menopausal symptom. Our physiotherapist explains tendon pain and joint pain in perimenopause and menopause.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain, tenderness, fatigue and poor sleep. It is a long-term condition, and symptoms can overlap with — or be made worse by — menopausal changes. A careful assessment helps separate the two and target treatment.

How we can help

Musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy, available at our Shrewsbury clinic, focuses on assessment, graded loading exercises and practical advice to get you moving comfortably. Where hormones may be contributing, a specialist consultation can consider that alongside.

Frequently asked questions

Can menopause cause joint pain?

Yes. Joint aches and stiffness are common in perimenopause and menopause, and falling oestrogen can make tendons more vulnerable to pain.

Do you treat fibromyalgia?

We can assess widespread muscle pain, look at how hormonal change may be affecting it, and offer physiotherapy to help you manage it.
