How we help
Coil fitting
Hormonal coil fitting and removal for contraception and as part of HRT, performed by our women's health specialists.
- From £325
- 45 min appointments
- In person
We fit and remove hormonal coils (such as the Mirena), contraceptive implants and HRT (oestradiol) implants. Procedures are carried out at our clinics by clinicians trained by the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH).
The Mirena coil
The Mirena is a small device placed in the womb that releases a progestogen called levonorgestrel. It:
- provides contraception
- protects the womb lining as the progestogen part of HRT, when used with oestrogen
- often makes periods lighter, which helps with heavy bleeding in perimenopause
Other hormonal coils are good contraception and can help with heavy periods, but they are not licensed as part of HRT. Read more about progestogen options.
Implants
A contraceptive implant is a small, flexible rod placed under the skin of your upper arm. It provides contraception for up to three years.
An oestradiol (HRT) implant is placed under the skin and slowly releases oestrogen. It may be an option if other ways of taking HRT haven’t suited you. Your specialist will talk through whether it is right for you.
What happens
Your clinician will explain the procedure, check it is suitable for you and answer your questions before anything is fitted. Most fittings take place within a 45-minute appointment.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Mirena coil count as HRT?
It can provide the progestogen part of HRT, which protects the womb lining while you take oestrogen. You still need oestrogen alongside it for menopause symptoms.
Do I still need contraception in perimenopause?
Yes. You can still get pregnant during perimenopause, and HRT is not contraception. A Mirena coil provides both contraception and womb protection.
