Anxiety & relationship trauma

Anxiety, low mood and the effects of difficult relationships often surface or intensify around hormonal change. Talking therapy, alongside medical care where it helps, can make a real difference.

How hormones and mental health connect

Hormones and mental health are closely linked, and the relationship works both ways. Changing oestrogen and progesterone can affect mood, anxiety and sleep — while stress, trauma and relationship difficulties can affect how strongly you feel hormonal symptoms. Our psychotherapist explains the connection.

Relationship trauma

Past or present difficulties in relationships — with partners, family or others — can shape how safe, calm and connected you feel. They can resurface at times of change, including perimenopause and menopause. Systemic psychotherapy looks at the relationships and patterns around you, not just at symptoms, and can be done individually or as a couple.

How we can help

You can see our systemic psychotherapist, Liz Tatham, in Nottingham or online. Where hormones may be playing a part, a specialist consultation can look at that side too, so the plan covers both. If you are in crisis or feel unsafe, contact your GP, call NHS 111 (option 2 for mental health), or in an emergency call 999.

Frequently asked questions

Can menopause cause anxiety?

It can. Changing hormone levels can affect mood and anxiety, and many women notice anxiety for the first time, or more strongly, in perimenopause. It is worth getting the whole picture assessed.

Do you offer couples therapy?

Yes. Systemic psychotherapy can be done individually or as a couple, in Nottingham or online.
